Introduction

Telefónica's Ideas Locas team develops projects and research in different fields and proposes a new universe for you to experiment, ideate, learn and innovate.
They propose the following challenge: In a world where digital threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, protecting data integrity has become a crucial priority. Ransomware attacks, which hijack and encrypt critical files, are one of the most common and destructive threats today. Using advanced security tools like Latch, our digital latch, can be key to preventing these threats. With Latch, you could "block" the modification of files in specific folders, acting as an effective barrier against ransomware.
Integrating Latch with software agents on operating systems such as macOS and Linux would offer a powerful solution for managing folder permissions, ensuring that files remain safe and secure from unauthorized alteration. This system will be able to assign read-only permissions or restore the original permissions based on the state of the latch.

Challenge raised

It is proposed to conduct a study on the implementation of Latch as an anti-ransomware solution focused on macOS and Linux operating systems.
The aim is to:
Develop an agent specialized in managing folder permissions on macOS and Linux.
Configure these agents so that they can:
Block modification of files in specific folders by setting read-only permissions.
Reset folders to original permissions when the latch state allows.
Communicate with Latch servers to query and enforce latch status in real-time.
Continuously monitor the status of protected files and folders to detect and prevent unauthorized modification attempts.

Who is this challenge for you?
